Snapchat Ads Optimization: How to Lower Costs and Get More Sales

Snapchat Ads optimization guide: broad, targeted and retargeting campaigns by Rubel Hasan Rokib

Launching a Snapchat campaign is the easy part. Making it profitable is where most advertisers struggle. Costs rise, results drop and they decide Snapchat does not work for them. In my experience the problem is almost always the structure, not the platform.

In this guide I share the Snapchat Ads optimization system I use for local businesses in the US: one broad campaign, one researched targeting campaign and an always-on retargeting campaign, all built around city targeting and clean tracking. With this setup, a local event business in Texas reached 1,647 purchases at 8.15x ROAS in 12 months.

Quick Answer

To optimize Snapchat Ads, run three campaigns side by side: a broad campaign that lets Snapchat find buyers, an interest or lookalike campaign built on audience research, and a retargeting campaign for website visitors and engaged users. Track sales with the Snap Pixel and Conversions API, start with Auto-Bid, give each ad set a few days to learn, scale winners slowly and refresh creative often.

  • Run broad, targeted and retargeting campaigns together.
  • Retargeting plus broad is usually the strongest combination.
  • Target your city, ZIP codes or radius for local businesses.
  • Start with Auto-Bid, then test Target Cost.
  • Change one thing at a time and refresh creative every 2 to 3 weeks.

Start With the Right Structure: Three Campaigns

Instead of one campaign with everything mixed together, split your budget across three campaigns with clear jobs. Each one reaches people at a different stage, and together they cover the whole funnel.

Snapchat Ads campaign funnel: broad campaign, interest targeting and retargeting
  • Broad campaign: finds new buyers with very little targeting.
  • Targeted campaign: tests specific interests and lookalike audiences.
  • Retargeting campaign: brings back people who already know you.

A good starting split for a local business is about 50% broad, 25% targeted and 25% retargeting. Adjust it once you see which campaign brings the cheapest sales.

Campaign 1: Broad Campaign That Lets Snapchat Find Buyers

A broad campaign uses the Sales objective, optimizes for purchases and keeps targeting simple: your location and a sensible age range, nothing else. Snapchat then uses Pixel data to find the people most likely to buy.

  • Objective: Sales, optimized for Purchase (or Lead or Booking).
  • Targeting: only your city, ZIP codes or radius, plus age.
  • Placements: automatic.
  • Bidding: Auto-Bid.

Broad works best once your Pixel has collected some conversions. In Snapchat’s own guidance, narrow targeting with lower-funnel goals like purchases tends to limit delivery, so do not over-restrict this campaign.

Campaign 2: Researched Audience Targeting

The second campaign tests audiences based on research. Look at who your best customers are: age, interests, what they do on weekends. Then build two or three ad sets around them.

  • Lifestyle interests: for example foodies for a restaurant, fitness fans for a gym, event goers for a festival.
  • Lookalike audiences: built from your purchasers or customer list.
  • Competitor and category signals: people interested in similar local businesses.

Keep each ad set focused on one audience so you can see clearly which one wins. Turn off the weak ones after they have had a fair chance, usually 4 to 7 days.

Campaign 3: Retargeting Campaign (Always On)

Retargeting is where many Snapchat accounts make most of their profit. These people already saw your ad, visited your site or added to cart. They just need a reason to come back. In my accounts, retargeting combined with a broad campaign consistently gives the best overall results.

  • Website visitors from the last 30 days (from the Snap Pixel).
  • Add to cart and checkout without purchase in the last 14 days.
  • Video viewers and ad engagers who watched or swiped your ads.
  • Public Profile engagers who viewed your profile or Stories.
  • Exclude people who already purchased, unless you sell repeat products.

Use offer-led creative in retargeting: a reminder of the deal, the deadline or the date of the event. People in this stage already know you, so be direct.

Local City Targeting for US Businesses

US cities for Snapchat Ads local targeting: New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Miami

For local businesses, location is your most important setting. Snapchat lets you target by city, ZIP code or radius, and big metro areas like New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta have large, active Snapchat audiences.

  • Target only the area you actually serve, so no budget is wasted on people who cannot visit or buy.
  • If you serve several cities and your budget allows, give each city its own ad set so you can compare results.
  • Mention the city or neighborhood in your creative. A line like “This weekend in Houston” feels more relevant than a generic ad.
  • Check results by location and move budget toward the areas that convert best.

Bidding and Budget Optimization

  • Start with Auto-Bid. It gives Snapchat room to learn while your account is new.
  • Move to Target Cost once you get steady conversions. Set the first target slightly above your recent Auto-Bid cost per purchase, then lower it slowly.
  • Respect the learning phase. Do not edit a new ad set for the first 3 to 4 days.
  • Scale slowly. Raise the budget of a winning ad set by about 20% every two or three days, or duplicate it, instead of doubling it overnight.
  • Give each ad set enough budget to get conversions. If the budget is too small for purchases, optimize for an earlier event such as Add to Cart.

Creative Optimization: The Biggest Lever

On Snapchat, the creative decides most of your results. People swipe fast, so your ad has about two seconds to earn attention.

  • Use full-screen vertical 9:16 video that looks native, not like a TV commercial.
  • Show the offer, product or venue in the first second.
  • Test real people and UGC-style videos against polished ads.
  • Change one thing per test: the hook first, then the offer, then the call to action.
  • Refresh creative every 2 to 3 weeks, or sooner when frequency rises and results drop.

Tracking: Snap Pixel and Conversions API

You cannot optimize what you cannot measure. Install the Snap Pixel with all key events and add the Snapchat Conversions API, using the same event ID on both so purchases are not counted twice. Keep an eye on the Event Quality Score in Events Manager. Better data means Snapchat finds better buyers. My Snap Pixel setup guide walks through the full process.

Metrics to Watch Every Week

  • Cost per purchase (or cost per lead or booking).
  • ROAS: revenue divided by ad spend.
  • Swipe-up rate: shows whether your creative earns attention.
  • CPM: what you pay to reach 1,000 people.
  • Frequency: how often the same people see your ads. Rising frequency with falling results means it is time for new creative.

Real Example: Ticket Sales for a Local Business in Texas

One of my clients is a family farm and event venue in Texas that sells tickets for seasonal festivals. Using this structure, with broad and retargeting campaigns at the core, city-based targeting and offer-led videos, the account reached 1,647 purchases at 8.15x ROAS over 12 months. In one week in October 2026 it sold 305 tickets at 44.51x ROAS. You can see the screenshots on my Snapchat Ads service page.

Weekly Snapchat Ads Optimization Checklist

  1. Check that the Snap Pixel and Conversions API are still firing correctly.
  2. Compare cost per purchase across broad, targeted and retargeting campaigns.
  3. Pause ads and ad sets that have clearly lost after a fair test.
  4. Move budget toward the winning campaign and city.
  5. Launch at least one new creative test.
  6. Refresh retargeting offers and exclusions.
  7. Review frequency and creative fatigue.

FAQ

How do I optimize Snapchat Ads for more sales?

Run a broad campaign, a researched targeting campaign and a retargeting campaign together, track purchases with the Snap Pixel and Conversions API, start with Auto-Bid, and test new creative every few weeks.

Is retargeting worth it on Snapchat?

Yes. Retargeting website visitors, cart abandoners and video viewers usually brings the cheapest sales, especially when it runs alongside a broad prospecting campaign.

Should I use broad targeting or interests on Snapchat?

Use both. Broad targeting often performs best for purchase campaigns once the Pixel has data, while interest and lookalike ad sets help you test new audiences.

How long is the Snapchat learning phase?

It usually takes a few days, often around four. Avoid big changes to budget or targeting during that time.

When should I switch from Auto-Bid to Target Cost?

Switch once you get steady daily conversions. Set the first target slightly above your recent Auto-Bid cost per purchase and lower it gradually.

Final Thoughts

Snapchat Ads optimization is not about one magic setting. It is a simple system: broad to find buyers, targeting to test audiences, retargeting to close the sale, all built on clean tracking and fresh creative. If you have not launched yet, start with my guide on how to set up Snapchat Ads.
